Rock-n-Roll

When I was a boy back in Ohio
And I heard that music on the radio,
I knew something good was comin’ my way
As I listened to the Allen Freed Show.
He said the sounds we heard were something new
And he called the music Rock and Roll.
Well I’d never before been so moved
It felt as if it reached into my soul.

There was Chuck Berry singing Sweet Li’l 16,
And Frankie Lyman saying love’s for fools.
And Buddy Holly’s “That’ll Be the Day”,
And Elvis telling us not to be cruel.

I turned in late at night when all was quiet –
My folks thought that I’d gone to bed.
I’d play the music soft so’s not to wake them,
And fall asleep with the rhythm in my head.
Now people said that music was evil –
It would turn me to a sinner, bye and bye.
But if that beat would lead me to trouble
Well, that was something I couldn’t wait to try.

There was Chuck Berry singing Sweet Li’l 16,
And Frankie Lyman saying love’s for fools.
And Buddy Holly’s “That’ll Be the Day”,
And Elvis telling us not to be cruel.

Oh the years have gone by and I’m still rockin’
Playin’ that old rock and roll
Nothing else I know can so move me –
That music has become part of my soul.

So when I was a boy back in Ohio
And I heard that music on the radio,
I knew somethin’ good was comin’ my way,
As I listened to the Allen Freed Show.

There was Chuck Berry singing Sweet Li’l 16,
And Frankie Lyman saying love’s for fools.
And Buddy Holly’s “That’ll Be the Day”,
And Elvis telling us not to be cruel.

There was Jerry Lee Lewis with Great Balls of Fire
The Everly Brothers crying love bye bye
Little Richard knockin’ on the door
And I knew that rock and roll would never die!
